Papers primarily consist of correspondence but also include the will (1864) of Henry Alexander DeSaussure (1788-1865), inventories (1866) of his estate, and other items. Correspondence consists of letters among Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure, his father Henry Alexander DeSaussure, members of American and Swiss branches of the DeSaussure family, John W. Lewis, members of the Blanding family, and others concerning state and national politics, the presidential election of 1848, family matters, DeSaussure genealogy, and Civil War experiences of family members on the homefront and the battlefield. Included is a letter (1885) concerning the genealogy of the Edwards and Ford families; letters of Henry William DeSaussure (son of Wilmot G. DeSaussure) regarding political, social, and economic conditions and race relations in Charleston (S.C.) in 1865; and a letter (1842) to Miss Rebecca L. Holmes in Charleston (S.C.) from her cousin James D. Blanding, an attorney, who writes about friends and family matters (mentioning the illness of "Cousin Mary DeSaussure's boy") and about an "old, honest, ugly assault & battery client;" the letter includes a pencil sketch of the client. Other items include notes on DeSaussure genealogy, receipts, and a wedding invitation (1855).

Lieutenant Colonel Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure (1822-1886) of the 1st Artillery Regiment of the South Carolina Militia, which was later absorbed into the Army of the Confederate States of America, commanded Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island, December 1860-January 1861, and artillery at Morris Island, March-April 1861, in the harbor of Charleston, S.C.
